Odysseus’ pilgrimage to the Far North. A historical novel based on “the Odyssey” by Homer
By Erik Dahl
“Odd and his comrades had been sailing for nine days. During days and nights his fleet of twelve proud ships had drifted by current and wind into unknown waters. The nights were long and dark, and even during daytime heavy clouds and fog limited the visibility. The boats passed barren cliffs and deep fjords …”
The fantastic voyage takes place along the Norwegian coast – 3500 years ago. The story resembles in every detail the narrative of the Odyssey by Homer. At the same time, it also bears strong resemblance to other well-known stories from the Norwegian coast, among them “The Last Viking” by the Norwegian novelist Johan Bojer (1872-1959). You may also find similar themes in the sagas by Snorre Sturlasson (1179-1241). His stories are based on traditions from centuries back, maybe millennia.
Although this book doesn’t provide a definitive proof that Homer was inspired by seafarers in the Far North, it does give surprisingly strong evidence that such a connection is indeed possible. The book is based on detailed studies in the field and careful research. Some results from these studies are assembled in fourteen appendices.
